Mz MILANO TALKS OWNING HER RECORD LABEL, PRODUCTION & HER FASHION STYLE.
Milano is a Ghanaian-Italian artist living in between London & Dansoman, Accra. She performed at the SWRK x 730 “Butterfly Effect” party and did great. Currently releasing music through her self-funded label So Sounds Records & promoting her newest single “Show Dem”, we sat down with her for a conversation.
730 Mag: Thank you for your time Mz Milano. How have you been?
Mz Milano: I’ve been great, thank you — busy working. Hope you’re good too?
730 Mag: I’m good! By the way, congrats on the premiere of your new video for ‘show dem’. Talk us through the inspiration behind making the music video.
Mz Milano: Thank you. I had recorded the song at No Stars studio in London and I usually work with a director called Mr Eye. So when he heard the song he came up with the creative ideas. I flew to Ghana to shoot and we made it happen
730 Mag: That’s dope! Thank goodness we got to see your dance moves
Mz Milano: Lol yes I actually love dancing
730 Mag: What other art expressions should we associate with Mz Milano besides music and your love for dancing
Mz Milano: Acting and modelling. I have worked with various designers previously and been featured in vogue and Elle Italia
730 Mag: Wow! That is a big deal. On that note, tell us more about yourself. Who is Mz Milano? Your background?
Mz Milano: I was born in Ghana and lived in Italy for a short time growing up. I live in London now, it’s where I’ve spent most of my life.
730 Mag: Out of these three countries, which has influenced your music the most?
Mz Milano: Well I started off with RnB and slowly transitioned to Afrobeats so I would say I was inspired by a lot of 90s RnB, SWV, Aaliyah that sort of thing but when I started hearing certain songs I decided to move to afrobeat that’s where I would say I got the inspiration from Ghana. Like it just flowed perfectly and hearing certain songs growing up at Ghana parties.
730 Mag: Haha! You’ve been partying for quite a while
Mz Milano: Not really a party person, just networking. I have a lot of friends who are DJs too. I like to go watch and listen to their set and show some love
730 Mag: Is that how you got into producing ?
Mz Milano: I was always a producer just not on the books. I was always like a co-producer before and very curious about making beats so I decided to learn. I felt like there weren’t many female producers too and there still aren’t very many. It came naturally to me so I continued working on my craft
730 Mag: In your opinion has that changed over the years? The number of female producers in the music industry?
Mz Milano: I feel there are a few more now but still not many
730 Mag: Do you think it is a lack of interest or there are some challenges that come with being a female producer or even an artist?
Mz Milano: I think it’s a lack of interest. Maybe I don’t feel there should be any challenges if you produce good music, you produce that
730 Mag: You mentioned enjoying DJ sets at these parties. What makes the list for your Ghana Party Playlist
Mz Milano:
Mz Milano — Show Dem
Amaarae — Princess Going Digital or Sad Girls Luv Money
ODUMODUBLVCK f/ BLACK SHERIF— Wotowoto Seasoning
King promise — Terminator
Mr Eazy — Patek
730 Mag: This will for sure get the party lit 🔥. So about your label So Sound Records, how has the experience been for you?
Mz Milano: Well I won’t lie and say it’s been easy — it’s been very challenging being an artist and dealing with the business side of things but I think it will make me more resilient and sharp. I learn so much from having my own label and how to make good business decisions is definitely one of the benefits
730 Mag: We will be here to support your journey. Your outfits though, love them. What would you say inspires your sense of style
Mz Milano: Thank you. I am very inspired by Italian fashion, I love black and stilettos but now I’m exploring more streetwear brands but I feel my heritage reflects in my style. That Ghalliano vibe
730 Mag: Haha! Love that — Ghalliano vibes — In 2024 what do you have in store for us? Music? Collaborations?
Mz Milano: I’ve been working with a few producers so more hot music for you this year
730 Mag: Alright! We’ll be On the lookout for it. Thank you for your time Mz Milano
Mz Milano: Thank You.
